1. Engine Speed Sensor
Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got 0ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please chime in! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or in a local parts store.
