The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die.
