Lolita's care
For decades activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita blue & gold macaw's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to go back to the sea.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals who bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of updates on Lolita's health, and her status, but questions remain. Some experts, such as Akromas who was a trainer or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have raised concerns about her diet. According to the most recent update on the Friends of Lolita site, she eats 115 pounds of salmon a day, in addition to herring, capelin and squid.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some claim is too small for her.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is undeniable, Lolita's health continues to deteriorate. Animal welfare groups have expressed concern about her and would like to see that she is released back into nature. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as a tourist attraction for decades. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a vulnerable state.
The Miami Seaquarium which is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not provided information about Lolita's present state of health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is deteriorating.
Since her captor does not have to divulge this information, it is not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an important role in the deaths of captive orcas.
Despite these ongoing health concerns Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than ever before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale out of her tank into her native waters in the Pacific.
The move comes following years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal issue.
